8/15/2023 0 Comments Figma paid plans![]() The other reason is that Figma was doing quite nicely and had no need to sell itself. That alone is worth a whole bunch of money!”īut even that need doesn’t quite explain the overpayment. As the veteran analyst Ben Thompson puts it in his newsletter, the reason why Adobe is both willing and has no choice but to spend so much is: “Figma is set to be the ‘operating system for design’, which means that in the long run Adobe has to operate on Figma’s terms, not the other way around to put it another way, Adobe is not only paying for long-run control of design but also its own independence. As James Carville, Bill Clinton’s strategist, might have said: “It’s the workflow, stupid!”Īnd Figma, to all intents and purposes, already owns that workflow space, whereas Adobe only makes tools that people use. And in that context, project management and the creation of workflows that are efficient, user-friendly and agile is moving centre stage. In the networked world, more and more work is being done by geographically dispersed teams who have to collaborate online. So why would Adobe want to lay out such a mountain of cash to acquire this minnow? The answer is that its leaders are thinking ahead and they see a strategic threat in the making. Its focus is on enabling teams of designers to create workflows – using brainstorms, whiteboards, sticky notes, etc – that suit them and their collective projects. If a customer uses Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, well, that’s fine by Figma. None of these tools is a serious competitor for the heavy-duty ones that Adobe markets and indeed the Figma designers have always been ecumenical about what people choose to use in their design work. ![]() Admittedly, the box with the response is tiny, but if you scroll through the response, it's as real as it gets.Figma, in contrast, is a smallish company that produces nifty web-based tools to enable teams working on user interface and user experience design projects to collaborate online. After a second or so, you should have that field pre-populated with the temporary token. ![]() ![]() Normally you need a token to use the API-the playground allows you to create a temporary one by just clicking the Get personal access token button. Only one piece of data is required, and that is the file ID we just got. There's a handy API playground here, under the heading Try it out for yourself. In fact, what we want to do is to scroll all the way down to Figma files > Endpoints > GET file. For now, what we want to do is just get a quick glimpse of how stuff looks under the hook. You can skip quite a lot of the sections in the beginning. As always, documentation like this is something you want to bookmark if you are building things with, or for, an API. The page is not exactly short, and you'll navigate the fastest if you use the left-hand side menu. Indeed, that's the base of the endpoint we will call soon. Go to the Figma REST API documentation site. For now, copy the part between /file/ and /My-test-file-that is the document ID segment we need to use with the API now. We will talk more about document structure soon. The viewport is so we can-just like you have probably done in Google Maps at some point or another-share a location so that others can directly see what you want them to look at. Further, Figma has the concept of nodes, a node essentially denoting an object in your file. It's worth mentioning that the main type you will use is files, but there are several more, like teams and components. Paste this somewhere so we can take a look at it. We can do this by right-clicking the window tab near the top (with our document name) and clicking Copy Link. One of the least intuitive things in Figma is actually finding the document ID itself. Let's pop into Figma and create a new file. How about we inspect a brand-new, blank Figma design file? Finding the document ID # The coarsest item we are interested in would be a file, else known as a document. To call Figma's API, you will need to pass along your token and then specify what you are requesting. There is a rate limit on the API, so you should avoid using it excessively.
